Artist Showcase #1

Every 2 weeks, The Nest will shed light on 4 different artists or collectives in our Artist Spotlight. This week, we are featuring 3 artists: Nakeya Brown, Dineo Bopape, and Marvin Luvualu Antonio, along with art collective Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter (BWA for BLM).

Nakeya Brown

"Nakeya Brown is a photographer on the rise. Currently pursuing an MFA at George Washington University, her work addresses the complexities of Black female identity with a specific focus on hair politics. Her photography - both still life and portraiture - is deliberately rooted in a feminist praxis, blending soft color palettes with distinct markers of Black hair care"

Dineo Seshee Bopape

Dineo Seshee Bopape is a South African multimedia artist. Using experimental video montages, sound, found objects, photographs and dense sculputural installations, her artwork "engages with powerful socio-political notions of memory, narration and representation."

Marvin Luvualu Antonio

Marvin Luvualu Antonio is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores but is not limited to the topics of identity politics, objecthood and the artist as subject.

Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter

In July of 2016 , over 100 black women artists converged to fight this ongoing injustice, forming the underground collective Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter (BWA for BLM). On Sept. 1, the artists converged at New York’s New Museum for a single evening and public event, uniting against the institutionalized violence that continues to plague black communities, both on city streets and in hospital waiting rooms.
